Center for Basic and Translational Research on Disorders of the Digestive System

Upcoming Events

The Rockefeller University Center for Basic and Translational Research on Disorders of the Digestive System (CDDS) was established in 2012 with a $15 million gift from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to fund research into digestive disorders including metabolic diseases, cancers, and infections. In 2015, the Helmsley Trust generously renewed its support for the CDDS with a second three-year grant of $15 million. The Center supports interdisciplinary research and fosters collaborations among some 20 Rockefeller labs that study biological processes related to the digestive system. The Center also supports clinically oriented studies centered in The Rockefeller University Hospital.

Conditions under study in the Center include inflammatory bowel disorders such as Crohn’s disease and colitis; obesity and metabolic disease; celiac disease; disorders of bowel motility, including scleroderma; and several malignancies, such as gastrointestinal stromal tumors and colorectal, liver, and pancreatic cancer.

In addition to including laboratories working in the fields of immunology, microbiology, cancer biology, and metabolic disease, the Center provides support for the training of Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers, and physician-scientists. The Center also provides seed funding in the form of Pilot Project Grants for early phase projects involving promising new paths to discovery. The Center sponsors seminars and symposia, and provides support for the purchase of essential shared equipment.
